Lessons in Resilience from Filipino Entrepreneurs

In his article titled “Lessons in Resilience from Filipino Entrepreneurs,” Dr. Jaime Aristotle B. Alip emphasized that despite the slow economic growth of the Philippines during the first quarter of 2026, Filipino entrepreneurs — especially micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) — continue to demonstrate resilience, determination, and adaptability.

According to the author, small businesses such as sari-sari stores, eateries, online sellers, and family-run enterprises remain the backbone of the local economy and provide livelihood opportunities to millions of Filipinos. However, these businesses also continue to face major challenges brought about by rising prices of goods, fuel costs, and other operating expenses.

The article highlighted the stories of entrepreneurs Rizalina Tolentino and Yolanda Gaceta, who successfully overcame financial struggles, business losses, and economic crises through hard work, careful planning, and innovation. Their experiences showed the importance of having contingency plans and being flexible in responding to changing market conditions.

Alip also pointed out that diversifying income sources and avoiding dependence on a single supplier are important strategies in maintaining business stability during uncertain times.

Furthermore, the article encouraged the government and private sector to strengthen support for MSMEs by providing easier access to financing, business training, mentorship programs, and digital opportunities to help more Filipinos build sustainable businesses.
